"Bring on the bad storms. When we rebuilt, a lot of the materials were chosen for weather resistance."
DeSoto County, FL
Hurricanes are really common in our county, so we definitely factored that in when we rebuilt our house last year.
The Wilkins family — dad Greg, mom Pauline and kids Jasper and Kate, along with their dog, Buddy — love their lifestyle in DeSoto County, nestled in the heartland of Florida.
A warm and welcoming community more than makes up for the frequency of severe weather.
"We love living here–even though the weather can get crazy," says Greg. "Hurricanes are really common in our county, so we definitely factored that in when we rebuilt our house last year."
Greg and his family decided to create a hurricane-resistant home. Their builder chose the HP+™ Wall™ system for the outer walls, and spray foam insulation was used in the attic to improve wind uplift resistance at the roof. Insulated doors completed the highly durable exterior shell of the home.
"We chose a lot of the materials for structural strength, and because they're FEMA approved for flood zones," says Greg. "Best of all, we're saving a lot of money in our new home; our energy bills are much lower than before."Want to know more about durable high-performance homes?
